This is a supplement to the text book How To Drive © 1997 by the American Automobile Association. The statements given are based on Minnesota statutes or statistics for Minnesota. The chapter references refer to the How To Drive textbook. As much as possible, the facts presented are in the same relative order as the textbook for easy reference. The footnotes after statements, such as (MN Stat.168.09 Subd. 01) and (MN Crash Facts 1997 pg. 23), refer to Minnesota statutes or other sources of information. If you would like to reference the actual statute you may refer to the Minnesota Traffic Statutes curriculum package that driver education teachers have available. This package contains a printout of the 1997 Minnesota Statutes along with a simplified and an untrue version for each. The package also contains a computer file that works with a WWW browser to allow searching the database. This web page is available at the address http://WWW.StCloudState.edu/~mhsc/statutes.html from any internet connection.

There are several ways this material can be used. A careful study of this supplement and parts of the textbook mentioned in this supplement will prepare a novice driver for the Minnesota permit test. As the driver education class studies the textbook chapter by chapter, a student should again read the information for each chapter in this supplement. If there is a difference between statements in the textbook and this supplement, a Minnesota driver should remember the information given in this supplement.

Driver education is designed to help new drivers learn more than just the information included in the permit and road tests. Much of that knowledge is presented in the textbook. This supplement is not designed to be a stand-alone set of materials.
