David Vestal's Review of the 2003 Calendar
James R. Dean's 2003 Photo Calendar is now available. "The 26 page spiral bound calendar measures 16” by 10” when open. It has 12 mo. w/ 14 photos. The 1997 0ne is good again this year. The Deal: Buy 5 or more and get one free. It makes a great gift.” So says the Dean. The 2003 calendar is $16.00, as is the 1997 one, also available. Minnesota residents add 6.5% sales tax; and there is a postage charge of $3 per order. James R. Dean, Avon, MN 56310 and www.cloudnet.com/~image. The thing is, Dean has a quirky and lively vision, not concerned with convention or unconvention, but with doing just as he pleases—more interesting, to me, than most photography that tries to be art. (A photo is or isn’t art, period, whatever the intention; and who cares?) In Dean’s case a real person is behind the pictures, and this shows. And that reminds me of another matter of word use. It is taken for granted in the theater and in still and movie photography that one may use models and/or actors, as the case may be, but also one may use “real people” instead of actors and/or models. Shouldn’t this distinction, which is to die for, also go for artists and other photographers? Don’t we deserve it? The magazines and museums would say, “Instead of photographers, we used real people.” Wouldn’t that be great? Honk if you love silence.
